STUMPS: Australia is trailing New Zealand’s 162 by 124-4.

That concludes Day One of the second test. and perhaps even on days four and five.

Things moved quite rapidly after New Zealand strolled to a 47-0 lead after a calm and steady start. After lunch, Josh Hazlewood (5-31) unleashed a devastating attack, taking out four of the top five Black Caps, sending the host team into a tailspin at eight down for 107. A first innings 162 was a terrible effort on a good surface, but some late swashbuckling from Tim Southee and Matt Henry added a helpful 55 to rescue New Zealand’s blushes.

But Tim Southee’s team rallied once again. Matt Henry led the way with astute, accurate bowling. He claimed the crucial wickets of Green (25), Head (21), and Khawaja (16), while Ben Sears, making his debut, got things going by getting Steve Smith out for 11. It departed from Australia.
