by HT Sports DeskHighlights of the first Test match between India and England: Kuldeep Yadav took five wickets, while Ravichandran Ashwin claimed four, as ENG was completely destroyed.

As India finished Day 1 at 135/1 after 30 overs, captain Rohit Sharma held firm and amassed a well-earned half-century (52*). Shubman Gill also played with poise, finishing his brief innings at 26 not out. Despite the visitors’ early comfort at 175/3, the squad showed tenacity by mounting an outstanding comeback to limit England to a modest score of 218. Spinners claimed all ten English wickets, including a spectacular five-wicket haul from Kuldeep Yadav.

Live score for Day 1 of the Fifth Test between India and EnglandWhile trying to hit a third consecutive boundary from Shoaib Bashir, Yashasvi Jaiswal, displaying his batting prowess once again, perished for 57 despite getting off to a promising start. Jaiswal became the highest run scorer for India against England in a Test series, surpassing Virat Kohli’s record of 655 runs despite his comparatively brief tenure. At Stumps, India are only behind by 83 runs because to an innings of calm from Rohit Sharma and an aggressive, instinctive approach from Shubman Gill.

Towards the end of the second session, India gained a slight advantage in the match. Kuldeep caused another middle-order collapse in England by taking five wickets. He got England captain Ben Stokes after dismissing big-hitting batsman Jonny Bairstow, who was playing in his 100th Test match. Joe Root was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja in between the two wickets. In what has turned out to be a disastrous second session for them, both Stokes and Root made mistakes and both players, along with Bairstow, received failed reviews. This means that England is now without any players. England scored 175 but lost all three wickets.

After Kuldeep dismissed Ollie Pope late in the first session, India gained momentum, and England concluded the session at 100/2. The fact that India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah took full advantage of the pitch and conditions in the first hour of the match without conceding a wicket was a blessing for the visitors. Nevertheless, Kuldeep’s wicket of Ben Duckett gave India a much-needed boost, partly because Shubman Gill made an outstanding catch. Crawley continued and added a second half-century. When Pope fell and the umpires called for lunch, he was batting on 61 off 71 balls.

Having won the toss, the visitors elected to bat. Rajat Patidar, who captain Rohit Sharma claimed had an injury, is being replaced by Devdutt Padikkal, who is making his Test debut. Ravichandran Ashwin, who will play his 100th Test match, gave Padikkal his first cap. Later, in a special ceremony, head coach Rahul Dravid gave Ashwin his 100th Test cap.

The two teams will play the last Test of this thrilling five-match series at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, one of the coldest locations in the nation. Conditions won’t be easy by any means when they return there after a 10-day break. The extreme cold that has engulfed Dharamsala may be too much for the players to withstand, even with beanies, hoodies, and pullovers. Over the next five days, the lowest temperature will be about 1 degree, and the highest will not rise above 7 or 8.
